Key Stage 1 Shape work is an absolute gift when it comes to learning outside the classroom. It can provide you with the perfect opportunity to make Maths come to life and get some fresh air at the same time! With a little creativity you can cover all the objectives for Y1 shape work, and many of those for Year 2 with these engaging outdoor sessions.

Use voice and natural materials to investigate 3D shape in the natural environment.


Curriculum Objectives

  • Year 1 (Age 5-6)
    • Recognise and name common 2-D and 3-D shapes, including 2-D shapes [for example, rectangles (including squares), circles and triangles]
    • Recognise and name common 2-D and 3-D shapes, including 3-D shapes [for example, cuboids (including cubes), pyramids and spheres]
  • Year 2 (Age 6-7)
    • Identify 2-D shapes on the surface of 3-D shapes,
    • Identify and describe the properties of 2-D shapes, including the number of sides and line symmetry in a vertical line
    • Identify and describe the properties of 3-D shapes, including the number of edges, vertices and faces
    • Order and arrange combinations of mathematical objects in patterns and sequences
  • Experiment with, create, select and combine sounds using the inter-related dimensions of music.
