The Young People's Trust for the Environment have provided this sequence of five lesson plans with activities on Plants for Key Stage 1 children, accompanied by a PowerPoint presentation, which contains many fantastic photographs, so children can have a go at identifying common plants and trees. Thoroughly curriculum referenced, this resource can form a platform for a host of indoor and outdoor learning opportunities.

Curriculum Objectives

  • Year 1 (Age 5-6)
    • Identify and describe the basic structure of a variety of common flowering plants, including trees.
    • Identify and name a variety of common wild and garden plants, including deciduous and evergreen trees
  • Year 2 (aged 6-7)
    • Find out and describe how plants need water, light and a suitable temperature to grow and stay healthy
    • Identify and name a variety of plants and animals in their habitats, including micro-habitats
    • Observe and describe how seeds and bulbs grow into mature plants
    • Perform simple tests, identifying and classifying, gathering and recording data to help in answering questions
