Happy, Healthy Hens

A happy and healthy hen lays more eggs for the farmer. Design an environment for a flock of 100 laying hens.

Years: 3, 4, 5, 6

Duration: 120mins

Curriculum Objectives: 5

Subject: D&T

Resource Overview

To be happy and healthy hens need: the right diet and access to fresh water to be at the correct temperature – not too hot or cold, to have shelter from bad weather and to be protected from predators. In this project pupils are challenged to meet this design brief with plenty of supportive content.

Originally designed as part of a STEM based competition, this works wonderfully well as a challenging, multi faceted lesson in its own right. Thank you to Farmvention for allowing us to share it.

  • Generate, develop, model and communicate their ideas through discussion, annotated sketches, cross-sectional and exploded diagrams, prototypes, pattern pieces and computer-aided design
  • Investigate and analyse a range of existing products
  • Select from and use a wider range of materials and components, including construction materials, textiles and ingredients, according to their functional properties and aesthetic qualities
  • Use research and develop design criteria to inform the design of innovative, functional, appealing products that are fit for purpose, aimed at particular individuals or groups
