Resource Overview

A whole range of activities which can either be used individually or all together on one trip to your local woods. Written with the aim of encouraging children to explore geographical features, use and create maps, design and make a variety of products using natural materials and learn about forest animals and birds through a series of hands-on activities. The Forestry Commission have kindly given us permission to share this resource.

Teacher's Pack

The Early Years Teacher's Pack is a activity packed learning resource, which contains curriculum-linked activities, to teach learners about forests and how they're looked after for people and wildlife. All the activities have been designed to be used outdoors, in your local woods, park or school grounds.


Curriculum Objectives

  • Use aerial photographs and plan perspectives to recognise landmarks and basic human and physical features; devise a simple map; and use and construct basic symbols in a key
  • Use basic geographical vocabulary to refer to key physical features, including: beach, cliff, coast, forest, hill, mountain, sea, ocean, river, soil, valley, vegetation, season and weather
  • Use simple compass directions (North, South, East and West) and locational and directional language [for example, near and far; left and right], to describe the location of features and routes on a map
  • Use simple fieldwork and observational skills to study the geography of their school and its grounds and the key human and physical features of its surrounding environment
